Traditional courses seem to be the preference of the city students as they seek admissions to colleges. Most of the students taking admission in the undergraduate courses have shown interest in traditional courses, however, there are students taking up a number of professional courses too.

Students have been visiting several colleges and enquiring about the courses. To help them make a wise choice, counselling cells have been established.

Dr PK Sharma, Principal, Hindu College, said, “Students are opting for various courses. However, commerce stream is mostly preferred by the undergraduate students.”

Dr Suprabha Arya, admission and counselling head, BBK DAV College for Women, said, “This year, students are opting for traditional courses, such as Bachelors of Arts (BA), Bachelors of Computer Application (BCA), Bachelors degree in English (hons), and BSc (Economics) among others.”

“However, there is a chunk of students who prefer to go for professional courses, such as BA in Journalism and Mass Communication, BSc in Fashion Designing for better employment opportunities,” she added.

Vaibhavi, who wants to take up BSc (Economics), said, “I like economics as there are several employment opportunities.”

Shurti, a student seeking admission in BSc (Fashion Designing), said, “I wish to open a boutique in future as soon as I am done with my course. The idea of opting for fashion designing is to have an outlet to my creativity. ”

Davinder Singh, Registrar, Khalsa College, said, “I would call this year a mixed bag. Students are opting for traditional courses. We have students coming in for science and commerce courses too.”
