Amritsar: The Gate Hakima police have booked two jail inmates for reportedly possessing cell phones. They have been identified as Deepak Kumar of Kot Harnam Dass, Sultanwind Road, and Gurmukh Singh of Dasuha, Hoshiarpur. The jail authorities conducted a surprise check when the seizure was made. A case under Sections 52 and 42 under the Prisoners Act has been registered. TNS

Deceased staff’s kin to get jobs

Mayor Bakshi Ram Arora will give appointment letters to the dependents of deceased employees on Monday. A special function will be organised at the head office of the Municipal Corporation (MC). The MC House had passed the resolution to provide jobs to dependents of those employees, who died during the job. According to information, 52 beneficiaries would get appointment letters on the eve of Independence Day. TNS

Man booked for fraud

The police have booked Sunny Singh of Indira Colony, Jhabal road, for cheating. Complainant Manoj Kumar said the accused had business relations with him for the past five years. Sunny purchased articles worth Rs 10.15 lakh from him and gave cheques that bounced. TNS

Vehicles stolen

Unscrupulous elements have stolen two bikes, a scooter and an auto-rickshaw in the city. The police have registered separate cases. Complainants Rajwinder Singh, Sham Sunder, Anoop Kumar and Harpreet Kaur and Harpreet Singh told police that their vehicles were stolen by unknown persons from Azad Nagar, Court complex, Ganpati Tower, Ranjit Avenue and Nikka Singh Colony, respectively. Efforts to ascertain the identity of the thieves were on, the police said. TNS

Youth found dead

Amritsar: Mystery shrouds the death of a youth who was found unconscious near a marriage resort on the Amritsar-Attari bypass road here Saturday evening. He was admitted to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in the 108 emergency ambulance where he died. According to the police, the youth was in his mid-thirties with a height of 5’6 feet. He was found in a nude condition and is yet to be identified. Police officials said his body had the name “Sunny” written on his right shoulder while three names— Amit Chaudhry, Satya Chaudhry and Yogesh Chaudhry— were written near his right wrist. They said the body was kept in the mortuary of Jallianwala Bagh Memorial Civil Hospital for 72 hours for identification. He said the cause of the death would be ascertained only after the post-mortem examination. TNS

Office-bearers elected

All Private Transport Workers’ Union (APTWU) elected new office-bearers at a meeting at the bus stand here today. Dilbagh Singh has been elected president of the union while Baldev Singh Babbu is general secretary. The APTWU condemned attacks on drivers and conductors by influential transport companies of politicians. Baldev Singh Babbu said, “The staff of private bus companies of political leaders have been thrashing drivers and conductors of other buses. If the government fails to take action against them, we will intensify our struggle.” Union leaders Bant Brar, Jagdeep Singh Chahal and  Hardev Singh Arshi  were present on the occasion. They demanded hike in salaries and other benefits  for drivers and conductors of private operators. TNS

Civil hospital bags honour

The Jallianwala Bagh Martyrs Memorial Civil Hospital here has been accorded National Quality Assurance Certificate by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH). The certificate was presented to Civil Surgeon Dr Narinder Kaur and SMOs Dr Charanjit Singh and Dr Rajinder Arora by Health Minister Brahm Mohindra and Director Health Dr Rajiv Bhalla in Chandigarh on Friday. The minister also announced a cash award of Rs 2 lakh for the hospital. An event to congratulate the entire staff of the hospital was held at Civil Hospital. TNS
