Amritsar, February 17

Uncovered heavy vehicles, such as trucks and tractor-trolleys carrying sand, earth and debris, have been troubling commuters on city roads. As the construction of several overbridges has been going on, the movement of such vehicles have increased in the city.

The MC had recently instructed drivers of garbage lifting vehicles to cover the filth while heading towards the Bhagtanwala dump. Private vehicles loaded with construction material continue to ply uncovered.

Commuters, especially motorcyclists, are the major suffers as sand particles get into their eyes while driving. “I was traveling on the bypass road where several trucks loaded with sand were moving. All were uncovered, much to the chagrin of commuters. Amid such a situation, highly velocity winds add to the commuters’ woes,” said Sandip, a commuter from New Amritsar area.

Ironically, there is no check of authorities on the practice. As per the rules, any vehicle carrying sand, garbage, earth or dairies should be covered.

The police and the Municipal Corporation can issue challans over such violations but hardly any action is taken.

Dr Raju Chowan, Municipal Health Officer, said, “We have instructed the drivers of garbage lifting vehicles to get these covered. Action will be taken against violators.”
