Amritsar, April 21

A 30-year-old woman, Rajwinder Kaur, committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at Tangra here on Friday. The police have booked her in-laws for abetment of suicide.

The accused have been identified as her husband Malook Singh, father-in-law Kashmir Singh and mother-in-law Darshan Kaur, residents of Patti Bagh in Tangra.

Deceased’s brother Gopal Singh of Bundala stated to the police that Rajwinder was married to Malook in December 2015. He alleged that the accused used to harass her for bringing “insufficient” dowry. He said he got a call on Friday from his sister who told him that the accused was thrashing her. According to him, the deceased told him that she would end to her life by hanging herself.

The family was informed later that Rajwinder had ended her life.

The family of the deceased has demanded strict action against her in-laws. “We hope that justice will be delivered and the culprits will get exemplary punishment,” they said.

Bikramjit Singh, SHO, Tarsikka police station, said a case under Sections 306 and 34 of the IPC was registered against the accused. No one has been arrested. Further investigation is under way, he added.
