Youth thrashed, four booked

AMRITSAR: The rural police booked four youths for allegedly abducting and thrashing a youth in Chananke village here yesterday.

The rural police booked four youths for allegedly abducting and thrashing a youth in Chananke village here yesterday. No arrest has been made so far.Those booked have been identified as Ranjit Singh, Harpal Singh, Davinder Singh, all residents of Bhoewal village, and Gurmukh Singh of Chananke village.

Bir Singh, a resident of Chananke village, told the police that he along with his nephew Baljinder Singh was standing in the street when the accused turned up and attacked Baljinder. They thrashed and took him on their bike.

Balkar Singh, investigating officer, said that the youth was rescued late evening from Bhoewal village while the accused managed to slip away from the spot. He said a case under Sections 365 and 34 of the IPC was registered against them.

He said victim’s cousin Sukhcharan Singh had solemnised his marriage with the sister of the prime accused, Ranjit Singh. Sukhcharan hails from a Dalit family while the girl belongs to upper caste. The couple had got married in Punjab and Haryana High Court (HC) against the wishes of girl’s family. He said raids were on to arrest the accused who had been on run.

According to the police, they are hopeful of arresting the accused soon. More details would surface after interrogating them, said senior officials of the police.

Inter-caste marriage

Victim Baljinder Singh was in a street outside his house when four assailants turned up, thrashed and took him along with them on their bike. He was rescued from Bhoewal village by the police. Baljinder's cousin Sukhcharan Singh has married the sister of the prime accused, Ranjit Singh, due to which the the assault took place. The marriage was solemnised at the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the wishes of the girl’s family. The assailants are at large. The police are conducting raids to arrest them.
