The seriousness with which the government schools are taking various scholarship schemes is clear from the fact that as many as 51 schools of the district are yet to furnish names of students who cleared the Punjab State Talent Search Examination (PSTSE) and are eligible to get the scholarship under the scheme.
In a letter, the District Education Office (Secondary) has pulled up heads of as many as 51 schools for not furnishing names and account details of the students who are beneficiaries of the scholarship scheme.
The schools were directed to submit names, bank accounts and other details of Class VIII and X students who cleared the PSTSE in the financial year 2015-16.
The schools were to submit the details with the DEO by February.
The DEO has now directed the schools to furnish the details by February 21 or else the institutions will be added to the list of defaulters.
Elaborating on the scheme, district science supervisor Baljeet Singh Sandoha said the state government releases the amount of scholarship a year after the student clears the examination.
“We had sought names of the students who had cleared the examination in 2015. Apart from clearing the examination, the students become eligible for getting the scholarship if they clear their Class VIII or X examinations with at least 55 per cent score. The list of beneficiaries is prepared after the students appear for their final examination and then the schools are given a few months time to prepare the list after the results are out,” he said.
“The eligible students of the academic session 2015-2016 will be given the scholarship starting the financial year 2016-17. The amount, which is Rs 200 per month, will be directly transferred to their bank accounts,” Sandoha added.
Under the scheme, students of Classes VIII and X can appear for the examination. Those who clear it get Rs 2,400 per year scholarship till Class XII.
