Working on a contractual basis for the past 14 years, teachers recruited under the Alternative Inclusive Education (AIE) and Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) today convened a meeting at the Teachers’ Home and threatened to stage a state-level protest if their demands are not met.
Elaborating on their demands, members of the Shaheed Kiranjit Kaur EGS AIE STR Teachers’ Union Punjab today raised slogans against the state government and said: “Since 2003, we have been working on a contractual basis in government primary schools. After some of our union members laid down their lives, our salaries were increased in 2014. We are still getting Rs 5,000 per month which is a meagre amount in these times of inflation.”
Gagan, a leader of the union, said the union members were demanding that the law of equal work, equal pay be also applicable on teachers recruited under such schemes.
She further added that jobs of the teachers should also be regularised.
SC-BC employees protest
Members of the Gazetted and Non-Gazetted SC BC Employees Union also staged a protest in the city today in favour of their demands. Raising slogans, members of the union demanded that the state government must reserve posts for the employees belonging to the Scheduled Caste and Backward Classes category in congruence with their population. They also demanded that the employees belonging to these categories be also considered for promotions and increments as per the revised rules and on the basis of seniority.
They added that the SC, BC employees working on a contractual basis be regularised without any further delay.
They demanded that the students belonging to the SC-BC categories, who were beneficiaries of various state-run and Central Government scholarship schemes, be given scholarship amounts without delay to motivate them to study hard without facing any kind of financial constraints.
