A 20-foot breach was reported in the sullage carrier, which carries waste water of the city, near the solid waste management plant last night.

After getting information about the breach in the morning, officials of the Municipal Corporation (MC), Bathinda, rushed to the spot and got the work of plugging the breach initiated. Till the evening, the breach was temporary plugged.

Motors that supply water were shut down, resulting in the overflow of dirty water and leaving Power House Road submerged.

Residents, along with commuters, today faced a tough time due to the overflow of dirty water on the road.

BD Singla, Joint Commissioner, said, “A breach occurred in the sullage carriage. The work to plug it has been underway since morning. We have switched on the motors to restore the water supply by putting a temporary pipe into it.”

He said the breach in the sullage carrier were reported in the past also as its radius was less and the pressure of waste water was more.

“We have already decided to lay a parallel pipe with a diameter of 48 inches at a cost of Rs 17.20 crore. The aim of laying the parallel pipe is to enhance the capacity of the sullage carrier,” he added.

The lackluster attitude of the officials has led to the breach in the sullage carriage as it is learnt that the both of the sullage got, which have not been repaired for the past some time.

Jaspal Sharma, a resident of the city, said, “It is sad to see that the civic body has not learnt anything from the past incidents. An increased pressure of water in the carrier always leads to a breach. Why has the Municipal Corporation not repaired the carrier properly?”

Another resident Sidhant Garg, said, “Various roads were submerged in dirty water and commuters faced a tough time while passing through waterlogged roads.”
