Bathinda, February 16

A woman driving a Maruti Swift Dzire car on the 100-ft road pressed the accelerator of her car instead of applying breaks, hitting two persons sitting by the roadside.

The incident occurred around 1.30 pm when the woman was coming from the Bhagu Road side with a child.

Gurmeet Singh and Navdeep, both seriously injured, were sitting on a cot when the car hit them.

While one of them got head injuries, the other suffered fractures in his leg and hip.

The injured were shifted to a hospital in the vehicle of a commuter.

It was a narrow escape for a child and three other men who spotted the car and jumped away quickly.

“It was a hair-breadth escape for me but my colleague was not as lucky,” said Vicky, friend of Navdeep.

He said Navdeep worked with the Water Works Department in division number II while he was deputed in division number I.

Onlookers said the woman failed to produce a driving licence and even tried to shift her car from the place of the accident.

The woman, identified as Archna, is a resident of Patel Nagar. She also received injuries in the accident.

Onlookers said the woman was busy with her phone.

Police officials said a case in this regard would be registered after recording the statements of the injured persons.

Police post in charge Hargobind Singh said, “Since both victims are undergoing treatment, their statements have not been recorded yet.”

He said, “If both parties reach a compromise then a case will not be registered.”
