Bathinda lads secured the third place in the Punjab State Open Cities Chess Championship-2018, which concluded in Sangrur on Sunday.

The Bathinda lads, who were members of the Bathinda-B team, managed to get the third place despite the fact that a section of players, who have won international and national championships, participated in the two-day prestigious championship, which was organised by the Punjab State Chess Association with the active cooperation of Sangrur Chess Association.

The Bathinda-B team comprised of Sourav Arora (captain), Aman Jindal, Parmjeet, Deepak Bansal and Yashveer Goyal. Sourav Arora was also given the Best Board player award as he won four out of the total five matches while in the fifth match he drew the game with his opponent.

Last year, the Bathinda team were crowned champions in the Punjab State Open Cities Championship. Official sources said over 20 teams participated in this championship, which was organised to select the state team that will participate in the national open championship to be held in West Bengal in August 2018.

Yashveer Goyal, a member of the Bathinda team, is deaf and dumb, and has made his presence felt in the fields of badminton, academics and information technology.
