Bathinda, December 11

The General Categories Welfare Federation, Punjab, organsied its state-level convention at Children Memorial Dharmshala in Budhadha yesterday.

The federation demanded that a welfare commission be set up on the lines of the commission constituted for the Scheduled Castes and Tribes.

It also demanded that the proposed 117th amendment being carried to provide reservations in promotions without any quantitative or qualitative checks should be done away with.

Speaking on the occasion, M Nagraj, national president of the All India Equality Forum, said, “No welfare commission has been formed for the welfare of the General categories in the country. All welfare schemes are directed on the basis of a religion or caste basis. Society has been polarised on the caste lines and political parties have been using the reservations for their vote banks.”
