Fire destroys wheat on five acres in Barnala

Barnala, April 20

Wheat crop on five acres and stubble on 110 acres were gutted in a fire that broke out in various villages of Barnala district.

The authorities have started looking for the reasons behind the fire.

Wheat crop of Jasbir Singh on five acres was burnt in a fire on the Handiaya-Sangrur road. Officials of the fire department reached the spot to douse flames, but strong winds made their task difficult. In another incident, wheat stubble on three acres was burnt near a 220 KV grid in Handiaya village while stubble on four acres of Parkash Singh and three acres of Mukhtiar Singh were also burnt.

“The government must give compensation to all farmers for their losses as majority them are already under debt,” said Jasbir Singh. Wheat stubble on around 100 acres was also burnt in Gangohar, Kirpal Singh Wala and Nihalo Wala villages. The reason behind it is yet to be known.

“We will sent our report to the government for giving compensation to the affected farmers,” said Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dharmpal Gupta. The DC, along with Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harjit Singh and ADC Sandeep Kumar, visited the affected villages and assured the affected farmers of all help.

Crop gutted in three villages of Bathinda

Bathinda: Wheat crop on more than an acre at Nehianwala village in Goniana was gutted in a fire that broke out around 2 am on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.

Raja Singh, a farmer, said he had taken eight acres on lease and had sowed wheat. “In the wee hours, I got to know that a fire broke out in my field. I, along with some villagers, started dousing the flames. Meanwhile, fire tenders also reached the spot and we managed to control the fire,” he said. 

Measures taken on time by farmers averted the possibility of any untoward incident as a slum cluster is located near the fields. 

Jagsir Singh, a farmer of Kothe Nathiana village, also suffered a loss when his wheat crop on three canals and stubble on about three acres was destroyed in fire on Friday afternoon. Stubble in Rajinder Singh’s field at Mehma Sawai village and some wheat crop in the adjoining field of Karan Singh were also damaged in fire.
