Bathinda, February 15

In a major breakthrough, the CIA-2 wing of the Bathinda police has busted a three-member gang for furnishing fake bail bonds in a local court. The gang had been active in the city over the past few months and was earning huge money.

The accused have been identified as Hans Raj, a resident of Udham Singh Nagar, Maan Singh, a resident of Partap Nagar, and Pawan Kumar, a resident of Parasram Nagar.

A case under sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC has been registered against them at the Civil Lines police station.

Tarjinder Singh, in-charge of the CIA-2 wing, said the accused had procured fake identity proofs that were used for furnishing bail bonds.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by sub-inspector Gurinder Singh conducted investigation, which revealed that the gang was actively working at the local court of Bathinda. The accused were arrested from the court complex here.

The gang used to make money by preparing multiple fake identity proofs to get bail for accused facing criminal charges.

The accused would zero in on their targets at the court complex and identify those facing problems in filling bail bond. They would then strike a deal of anywhere between Rs 35,000 and Rs 50,000.

The police have recovered fake Aadhaar cards, identity cards, fake stamps and fake property documents from their possession.

Interestingly, the accused made fake documents in the name of councillor Jeewan Kumar, though there is no councillor by this name in the city.

The police said the investigation was on to unearth the involvement of others in the crime.

The CIA-2 in-charge said a few members of the gang were arrested by the Kotwali police six months ago in connection with the same case.

However, after coming out from judicial custody, they resumed the same business, he added.

The accused were today produced in a court, which sent them in one-day police remand. Hans Raj had been booked twice, Pawan Kumar once and Maan Singh four times in the past.
