The CIA-1 staff has arrested a person on a charge of blackmailing. The accused has been identified as Varinder Kumar, a resident of Rampura.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Naveen Singla said accused Varinder Kumar used to take money by blackmailing the reputed personalities. He used to threaten them that he would defame them by pasting their posters using abusive language.
The SSP said a few days ago, the accused threatened Baldev Raj (72), a resident of Rampura Mandi, and asked him to give Rs 2 lakh. The SSP said Baldev, who a cloth merchant, gave Rs 28,000 to the accused, but he continued to demand money from him and his son Kamaldeep.
Later, they give him Rs 30,000 more as well, but the accused did not stop demanding money. Thereafter, Baldev refused to give more money.
Irked over it, the accused pasted pamphlets on which an abusive language was used against Baldev and his daughter-in-law. Thereafter, traders of Rampura Phul met the SSP and apprised him of the incident.
On a complaint of Baldev, a case has been registered against the accused at the Rampura city police station.
Rajinder Kumar, in charge, CIA, said the police had recovered Rs 25,000 and a vulgar pamphlet from the accused.
