Bathinda: The police have arrested a person with 75 gm of opium from Singo village here. The accused have been identified as Jagdish Singh, a resident of Singo village. Police officer Harjeevan Singh, who is investigating the case, said a case under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act had been registered at the Talwandi Sabo police station. TNS

1 nabbed with intoxicant pills

Bathinda: The police arrested a person with 170 intoxicant pills from Seego village on Saturday. The accused was identified as Gurjeet Singh of Talwandi Sabo. A case under Sections 22, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered. Police officer Bhupinder Singh said the accused was held at a naka when he tried to flee after seeing the police. TNS

Physiotherapy unit inaugurated

Bathinda: Vice-Chancellor of Guru Kashi University (GKU) Col BS Dhaliwal and Dean, Physical Education College, Dr Ravinder Sumal inaugurated a physiotherapy OPD unit at Physical Education College in the GKU on Friday. Dr Manmeen Kaur and Dr Gursharn Singh, in-charges of the unit, said they would provide treatment related to conditions like after-fracture osteoarthritis; back pain; cervical pain; shoulder and knee pain; hemiplegic; paraplegia and spots injuries. Dr Ravi said treatment would be done by electrotherapy machines and exercise therapy (Swiss Ball and re-education mats). TNS  

School boxers win gold medals  

Bathinda: Two students of Police Public School bagged gold medals during the recently concluded 63rd state boxing championship in Patiala. Taranjot Singh and Gursimran Singh bagged the gold medal. Now, they will represent Punjab at the Khelo India school games in Varanasi (UP) on December 25. School principal Monika Singh congratulated the medallists for their sterling performance and acknowledged the inputs and efforts of their coach Narinder Saini. TNS

Entrepreneurship Week 

Bathinda: The Baba Farid Group of Institutions (BFGI), through its industry-interactive entrepreneurship cell (IIEC), organised Entrepreneurship Week. The inaugural day of the week was chaired by Vikas Mittal, AGM, NABARD. On the second day, the resource person was RD Singla, a representative from Lead Bank. He apprised the students of documents and other ancillaries required for bank financing. Amit Bansal was the resource person on the third day of the event. On the last day of the event, there was a pitch-up session where five business plans were presented by students. TNS 

Cochlear implant surgery 

Bathinda: For the first time in the Malwa region, a cochlear implant surgery was performed on Jashdeep Singh (3.5) and Ajayveer Singh (4). The children were deaf and dumb. They were chosen in September at a free check-up camp organised for the screening of congenital hearing loss. The surgery of these patients was performed by the Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences and Research's Department of ENT. Dr Grace Budhiraja, Dr Darshan Goyal and Dr JP Goyal performed the surgery under the guidance of Dr JC Passey, director, Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi. TNS   

Awards for Lehra thermal plant

Bathinda: A team of Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant, Lehra Mohabbat, has won an award in study presentation. It has bagged the first prize in model presentation at the Rudrapur Institute of Technology. The contest was conducted by the Quality Circle Forum of India. The winning team comprises Bhupinder Pal Singh Gill, Yadwinder Pal Singh, Satdev Singh, Jaspal Singh, Balwinder Singh and Sukhwinder Singh. TNS

College newsletter released

Bathinda: Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, who is also the MLA from Bathinda, released the “DAV Newsletter 2016-17” on Saturday. The newsletter showcases various activities of the college, new initiatives, infrastructural strides and achievements of students and staff in the session. The minister congratulated principal Dr Sanjeev Sharma, his entire team and students of the college for their work in the field of education and for the welfare of society. TNS

Cultural event 

Bathinda: Guru Ram Das Polytechnic College, Jeeda, organised an event, “Welcome Rising Engineers 2017”, on its campus on Saturday. The event was organised to welcome the students who got admission to the college in the 2017 session. Chairman of the Sri Guru Ram Das Ji Educational Trust Dr Gajendra Shekhawat, Vice Chairman Dr Deepshikha Shekhawat and Dr Rajesh Maheshwati attended the event. Students presented various cultural items on the occasion. Gagandeep Singh was selected as Mr Fresher, Ramanpreet Kaur Miss Fresher, Ranjit Singh Mr Handome and Loveleen Kaur Miss Beautiful. TNS
