Members of the Non-Teaching Sangh today staged an hour-long protest at Punjabi University’s regional centre here against the management of the university. They demanding immediate release of the salary for the month of February, which is yet to be paid.

A member of the sangh, Rekha Rani, said the university was trying to terminate the services of the retired members of the staff who were reinstated by the university. “The university is yet to release our salaries for the month of February. While the university authorities cited cash crunch as the reason, the reality is that the university is planning to terminate the services of the staff who have been reinstated,” she said.

Sharing the demands of the union, she said the annual grant given to the university must be increased. “It is a pity that private universities which are fleecing students are thriving and making profit while a government university is going into losses. It is a clear indicator that the state government is not interested in sustaining the university,” she said.

Shinderpal, Simarjit Kaur, Veerpal Kaur, Gurvinder Kaur, Jatinder Kumar, Prem Singh, Sunil Kumar Grover and other members of the union demanded that an investigation should be done to know the reasons of the university’s losses and the deteriorating standard of education here. “Several expenses which are being incurred by the university have nothing to do with the functioning of the university and are adding to its financial burden,” they said.

They said timely deposits should be made in the GPF and NPF accounts of the university staff and transparency be maintained to make it easy to check accounts and know the balance. The union said the protest would continue till their demands were met.
