Rain fury leaves city in a mess

High velocity winds and rain threw normal life out of gear last night in the city.

The weather fury led to uprooting of trees and electricity poles, resulting in power failure in almost all areas of the city. Many areas didn’t receive power supply till midnight.

Even today, the power supply was disrupted throughout the day.

Uprooted trees also damaged the electricity wires, which also resulted in snapping of power supply.

Around 25 electricity poles fell down due to strong wind.

GT Road near Sirhind canal suffered the most damage as around 15 electricity poles fell along the road. A motorcycle was damaged after a tree fell on it.

Not just power, water supply was also disturbed and there were problems in telephone connectivity.

Manjit Kaur, a resident of Jujhar Singh Nagar, said a tree fell on the electric wires outside their house due to which the power supply was snapped till midnight.

Another resident Vikram Sharma said there was no electricity till midnight. They called at the electricity complaint centre but no one answered their call, he added.

PSPCL XEN Gagandeep Singla said due to the heavy storm, tress fell on the electricity wires, which resulted in power failure. Besides, in many areas, electricity poles fell down, he added.

Singla said employees of the Electricity Department managed to restore the power supply in almost all area of the city around 1.30-2 am last night.

However, power cuts were witnessed today in the city due to shifting of the load, the XEN said.

He said power had been restored while some individual complaints might have left unaddressed, which would be dealt with soon.

Signboards and hoardings were also blown away by the storm and high velocity winds.
