Residents of Guru Gobind Singh Nagar and the adjoining Dhillon Colony today protested against trucks illegally parked not only on the main road but also in the by-lanes of the area.

The protesters said they had approached the district administration and the police but nothing much had been done.

They said many devotees come to a gurdwara located near Green Palace.

Vishwakarma motor market is also situated there. They said drivers and helpers of these heavy vehicles often passed rude remarks at women passing by.

About two years ago, acting on a similar complaint by area residents, the police had issued challans to the drivers and helpers of trucks and trailers parked near Green Palace on the main road of Dhillon Colony.

Since the drivers of some of the vehicles were not present at the spot, their vehicles were towed away by the traffic police from the main road.

Sukhdeep Singh, a resident of the area, said while earlier, the drivers and helpers used to park their vehicles as the roads were quite broad and relatively less-frequented.

“Now, the road widening project is being undertaken on the Bathinda-Barnala stretch, the number of heavy vehicles parked in the area has increased manifold. Vehicles full of road laying material are parked in the vicinity,” he said.

He added that the roads and lanes of the area were so crowded with these heavy vehicles that the residents were sometimes left with no space to park their own vehicles outside their houses.

Residents asked the traffic police and district administration to look into the matter and sort it at the earliest.
