A protest rally was organised today against halting of wheat distribution under the Atta-Dal Scheme by the district administration.

A large number of SAD-BJP workers protested at the Parasram Nagar chowk in the city.

SAD-BJP workers alleged that the scheme initiated by the SAD-BJP government had been discontinued despite the stock of wheat had reached depots and a few beneficiaries had also received their share.

They claimed that during the tenure of the SAD-BJP government, the blue card holders got their share of foodgrain with ease.

SAD-BJP workers warned the government to continue the scheme or they would protest outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner.

Former MLA Sarup Chand Singla said, “The government has yet not given old age pension to the pensioners.”

He said they would not let any card holder to suffer.

“Beneficiaries have already been awaiting pension and foodgrain for the past few months. Further delay will worsen their woes,” he added.

Capt Amarinder Singh government’s promise of providing jobs to each family is also not fulfilled, he added.

SAD leader and former councillor Vijay Kumar said, “There are about 28,000 blue card holders and 15,000 blue cards had been rejected by the government.”

Sanjeev Kumar, a beneficiary, said it was unfair on the part of the district administration to halt wheat distribution under the scheme as a large number of poor families are dependent on subsidised foodgrain. — TNS
