Bathinda, April 17

A woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence in Lul Bai village on Monday. The deceased’s family accused her in-laws of demanding dowry and harassing her.

After getting the information, the Nandgarh police reached the spot and took the body into custody. Later, the body was handed over to her family members after conducting a post-mortem examination at the Civil Hospital.

ASI Gamdur Singh said the deceased had been identified as Gagandeep Kaur (24). A case of dowry and abetment to suicide has been registered against the deceased’s husband, Harvinder Singh, and her mother-in-law Rani Kaur on the complaint of deceased’s mother Sukhpreet Kaur, a resident of Rajpura village in Fazilka district.

The deceased’s mother told the police that her daughter Gagandeep was married to Harvinder Singh around two and a half years ago. “After the marriage, the accused started physically and mentally harassing my daughter. They started demanding dowry from Gagandeep. On Monday, Harvinder told me that he, along with his mother, had gone outside for some work and when they came back, they found the house locked from inside. After repeatedly knocking at the door, Gagandeep did not respond,” she said.

Thereafter, Sukhpreet and her relatives reached Gagan’s house. The police opened the door and found Gagandeep’s body hanging from the fan.

Investigating officer Gamdur Singh said raids were being conducted to arrest the accused.
