Chandigarh, October 14

The Chandigarh Police claimed to have started a special drive against wrong parking in the city till Diwali. Affixing wheel clamps on wrongly parked vehicles, towing of vehicles using hydraulic recovery vans and challaning of such vehicles have been intensified, the police said.

This month, 1,074 challans have been issued for wrong parking in the city, of which 392 were done through wheel clamps and 175 vehicles were towed. The police have tightened the noose around drunk drivers and challaned over 5,000 persons in less than 10 months. Last year, the number stood at 4,217. The traffic police are regularly setting up nakas using breath analysers at various locations near pubs, clubs, bars, restaurants and hotels. On Friday alone, 68 such challans were issued and vehicles impounded.

The police are now putting up nakas at various locations and also planning to set up mobile nakas. This way, offenders will not be able to take alternative routes to avoid these.

Traffic problems are compounding in the city as the festival season has kicked in. While mild jams begin around noon, the problem intensifies after 6 pm when people throng markets. Areas around Sectors 8, 10, 15, 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 35, 45 and the Industrial Area were the worst affected.
