Chandigarh, August 10

A local court today acquitted 10 persons in a 2015 rioting and attempt-to-murder case that took place near Colony Number 4 at the Industrial Area, Chandigarh, following the rape and murder of a minor girl.

The allegations could not be proved in the court. Ram Raj, Ajit, Munna Lal, Sandeep, Ajay, Parvesh, Shintu, Mahendru Devi, Rekha and Maya walked free from the court. They were arrested following the protest and after scrutinising the videography of the spot.

According to the police, the rioting incident took place on April 11, 2015, after the body of a three-year-and-nine-month-old girl was found near a nullah near Colony Number 4.

Agitated over the police investigations, the local residents had then allegedly pelted stones at police force. Among the 10, one of them had also stolen the camera of a cop.

The protestors were then booked for the offence under Sections 395, 307, 353, 332, 147 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 3 of the Prevention of Public Property Act.
