Patiala, June 25

Even a week after the registration of a case against an unidentified person for injuring four members of a family, the police have failed to make any headway in the case. Though eyewitnesses, who rescued the family and took them to the hospital, claim that they had caught hold of the accused and even identified the accused, the police are yet to make any arrest in the case.

The incident occurred on June 15 when a Ghangraula village resident, Jasvir Singh (30), along with his wife Narinder Kaur (28) and two kids, were going on their motorcycle when an SUV allegedly hit the bike which left all four injured. Passersby rushed the injured to the Rajindra Hospital, who were later referred to the PGI, Chandigarh.

However, since the patients were critical, they were admitted to a nearby private hospital where they were treated. While Jasvir Singh and his kids have been discharged, the woman is still admitted in the ICU where her condition is still critical. She has lost her one arm and is struggling with other injuries.

One of the eyewitnesses, Sumrinder Sira, who is working as assistant professor in Punjabi University and had rushed the injured to the hospital, alleged that the accident happened in front of him and he had even caught hold of the accused.

“While I and other passersby were picking the injured, the driver was busy destroying the number plate of his car so that he could not be identified. However, I nabbed him. He called his friend for help and was trying to rush in his SUV when I forced him to take the two injured kids to the hospital. Now, that I have already identified the accused and even provided his pictures to the police, they have still not registered a case against unidentified person since the accused belongs to a very influential family,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jasvir’s brother-in-law Nirmal Singh alleged that though the eyewitnesses had identified the driver of the SUV, the police was yet to make an arrest.

SHO Sadar Jaswinder Tiwana said, “We have registered a case on the statements of the injured who have not identified the driver. However, we are investigating the matter and hunt is on to trace the accused.”
