Chandigarh: A team of the Food Safety Department seized 180 kg of mangoes ripened  by using calcium carbide  in another raid  carried  out at  the fruit and vegetable  market in Sector 26 on Tuesday. The mangoes were seized and destroyed in the dumping ground of the city using MC vehicles. Food safety officers Bharat Kanojia, Surinder Pal Singh, Bhaljinder Singh, Mandeep Kaur, Nisha Juneja, Navneet Bagga and Amardeep Kaur conducted the raid in the early hours. Artificial ripening of fruits such as mango and papaya using calcium carbide is a common practice despite being prohibited under the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. The use of calcium carbide to ripen fruits causes serious health problems. TNS

Wife’s murder: Man, brother held

Chandigarh: A man and his brother have been arrested for the murder of the former’s wife. The duo, residents of Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26, had allegedly strangled the woman. Police sources said the accused — Mohammad Ishrar and his younger brother Intezaar — had been arrested for murdering Ishrar’s wife. The incident took place on March 25. They strangled the victim and took her body to Saharanpur for cremation. The victim’s family got suspicious and lodged a police complaint at Saharanpur. The Saharanpur police got a postmortem examination done which revealed that the victim was strangled. Inspector Jaspal Bhullar, SHO of the Sector 26 police station, said they received a report from the UP Police on Monday following which a case of murder was registered against both accused and they were arrested. The accused were produced in the court on Tuesday which remanded Ishrar in two-day police custody and Intezaar in judicial custody. TNS


Student’s body found hanging

Kharar: The body of Yashvardhan (18), a student of Government Polytechnic College, Khooni Majra, near Kharar, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his room on Tuesday. His father, Vijay Kumar, has alleged foul play and has sought a probe into his son’s sudden death. The Kharar police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC in this connection, presuming it to be a case of suicide. Vijay Kumar, a resident of Bihar, told the police that Yashvardhan was a student of the mechanical stream. He got a phone from the college to come immediately following which he took a flight to reach here. He was told by a friend of the deceased that he had committed suicide. Investigating officer Avtar Singh said the body was handed over to the family after a postmortem examination. OC
