Chandigarh: In two separate cases under the NDPS Act, charas and ganja have been recovered from two city residents. According to the police, Ishtkar Ahmad, a resident of Morigate, Mani Majra, was arrested from near a private school in Mani Majra while possessing 110 gm of charas. A case has been registered against him at the Mani Majra police station. In another incident, the police arrested Raj Kumar, a resident of Faidan village, Chandigarh, while possessing 510 gm of ganja. A case has been registered at the Sector 31 police station. TNS

Mobike taken away forcibly
Mohali: Two youngsters forcibly took away a motorcycle in broad daylight allegedly at gunpoint from two persons at Phase VII here on Thursday. The mobike was later recovered from the Chandigarh-Mohali border. The victims, Gurpreet Singh from Mundi Kharar and Parminder Singh, reportedly claimed that the miscreants were carrying a pistol, which they brandished while forcibly taking away the mobike. The police, however, rubbished the pistol allegation. “No pistol was used in the crime. I have investigated the matter. The victims told us nothing of the sort. The accused took away the motorcycle from Parminder by threatening him,” said Inspector Tarlochan Singh, who joined as the SHO of the Mataur police station on Thursday. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered. According to sources, the victims went to a house for some welding work. They were about to park the motorcycle when two miscreants, who came on foot, took away the motorcycle. “We have registered a case after recording the statements of the victims. As no pistol was used, no Section of the Arms Act has been slapped,” said Inspector Tarlochan Singh. TNS

Misbehaviour with cops: 2 held
Chandigarh: Two cases of assault and misbehaviour with police personnel have been registered by the police. A Head Constable of the UT police was assaulted by a resident of the PGI, while a woman constable posted in a PCR ambulance was harassed by a man in Sector 29. Head Constable Ashok Kumar, posted in the traffic wing, alleged that Ajay Kumar, a resident of the PGI, quarrelled with him at the PGI gate while he was on duty. A case under Sections 332 and 353 of the IPC has been registered against the accused at the Sector 11 police station. The accused has been arrested in the matter. A woman constable deputed on a PCR ambulance was allegedly abused and manhandled by 31-year old Vinod Kumar near Sector 29 on Wednesday night. Accused Vinod is a resident of Burail village in Sector 45. Police sources said the woman constable spotted an abandoned bag lying near the roundabout and started making inquiries about it. Accused Vinod, who was standing near the roundabout, was also questioned about the bag but he started abusing the woman constable. The area police were informed, who arrested the accused and registered a case against him at the Sector 31 police station. TNS

GST to bring down prices
Chandigarh: The new rates of GST announced on Thursday will provide relief to city residents as the rates of items such as foodgrains and cereals will get reduced now. It will also end the disparity in the taxation system. Sources said cereals, rice and pulses had been exempted now. The UT was levying 1 per cent tax on pulses. Hair oil and soaps will also become cheaper. The rates of sugar, tea and coffee will also go down. The tax on ACs has been reduced from 28 per cent to 18 per cent in the city. TNS

Vijay Dogra is PU’s Class C union chief
The results of Panjab University's Class C union elections were declared today. A total of 542 votes were polled and Vijay Dogra was elected president. He defeated Ramanand by a margin of 20 votes. Sher Singh was elected secretary and Phool Chand vice-president. —TNS

‘Kaushal mela’
Patiala: A ‘kaushal mela’ was organised at Virasat Institute for Skill Development, Patiala, under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna to enrol unemployed youth for training of unarmed security guards. MP from Patiala Dharamvira Gandhi inaugurated the event and had a round of the institute, including hi-tech security lab, computerised classrooms, and other equipment displayed there. Certificates along with the Best Cadet awards were also given to the trained guards. Dr Gandhi addressed the trainees, trainers and other invited officials on the unemployment scenario in the country, changes in government policies, working of outsourcing agencies and payment of wages to workers with special mention to unemployed and misguided youth, especially addicted youth, which is not yet controlled in Punjab. The MP also praised the institute and its management for excellent performance and contribution to the service of nation for implementing the PMKVY scheme where free of cost training, along with wage employment and placement, to unemployed youth is also given. Baldev Singh Thind, director of the institute, highlighted the efforts being made by the institute. OC

Mobile phone snatched 
Chandigarh:A motorcycle-borne miscreant sped away after snatching a mobile phone from a man at the Dadu Majra Colony. According to the police, Raja Ram, a resident of EWS Colony, Dhanas, reported that an unknown person riding a motorcycle sped away after snatching his mobile phone from near Trikona Park. The victim failed to note down the registration number of the motorcycle. A case has been registered at the Maloya police station and an investigation has been initiated. TNS

Man held for filling gas cylinders 
Chandigarh: One person has been arrested by the Chandigarh Police for illegally filling gas cylinders. According to the police, the complainant in the case, Inspector Kanshi Ram of the Food and Supply Department, Sector 17, reported that Arjun, a resident of Daria village, was illegally filling gas in cylinders at Sector 27. The police were informed about the incident and the accused was arrested. A case has been registered at the Sector 26 police station and an investigation has been initiated. TNS

Web portal for unemployed
Fatehgarh Sahib: To generate employment and provide a choice of employees to the employer, the district administration has launched a special website, www.ncs.gov.in. "Now, both employer and unemployed can register themselves on the website to get people of their choice," said Kanwalpreet Brar, Deputy Commissioner. She said after registration, an ID would be generated though which one could get information regarding employment and self-employment. "To get the ID, one has to provide his/her Aadhaar card number, qualification certificates and conatct number. People can also contact on toll free number 1800-425-1514 to get further information," said the DC. Arvinder Kaur, Employment Generation and Training Officer, said those looking for employees could also register and submit their details online. OC


Husband, in-laws booked 
Zirakpur: The local police here on Thursday registered a dowry case against the husband and in-laws of a woman, Amandeep Kaur. However, nobody has been arrested so far. According to the police, the victim, Amandeep Kaur, a resident of Palm Enclave, Zirakpur, in a complaint to the police alleged that she had got married to Maninder Singh in May last year and soon after the marriage, her husband and in-laws started harassing her for dowry. The victim also stated that she had been physically assaulted and constantly abused by them. The police have registered a case against her husband Maninder Singh Sarna, mother-in-law Surinder Kaur and father-in-law Amarjeet Singh under various Sections of the IPC. OC


Three held with poppy husk
Fatehgarh Sahib: The district police arrested three drug peddlers on Tursday and seized 140 kg of poppy husk from a truck, in which they were travelling. SSP Alka Meena said the accused used to bring poppy husk and opium from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. On a tip-off, a police party led by SP (Detective) Daljit Singh Rana and Amloh DSP Manpreet Singh laid a naka. Around 5 am, a truck was signalled to stop, but the driver tried to speed away, the SSP said. On being chased by the cops, the driver jumped out of the truck and managed to run away. The police arrested three occupants of the vehicle. Those arrested have been identified as Gurmeet Singh, alias Meeta, of Sirhind, Ranjit Singh, alias Jeeti, of Bassi Pathana, and Gurmeet Singh of Attewali. The driver was identified as Vikramjit Singh of Mandofal village near Sirhind. OC

Eateries, clubs to shut post-midnight 
Chandigarh: District Magistrate Ajit Balaji Joshi has issued orders that restaurants/dhabas, discos and clubs would remain closed from midnight to 4.30 am. The DC said commercial establishments/restaurants/dhabas, discos, clubs and vendors disturbed the public. “The order shall not apply to hospitals, chemist shops and petrol pumps,” he said. TNS

0007 goes for Rs 90,000 
Chandigarh: The e-auction of fancy registration number in the “CH01-BM series received an overwhelming response. On the first day, 0007 received the highest bid of Rs 90,000. The e-auction will continue till May 20. The other fancy numbers also received a good response, with 0002 attracting a bid of Rs 78,000, 0001 Rs 66,000, 0004 Rs 52,000 and 0005 50,000. The department has included 0001 number in the auction after the Transport Secretary had surrendered the number to the RLA. TNS 

All set for Amit Shah’s visit 
Chandigarh: As many as 200 cars and 500 two-wheelers will escort BJP chief Amit Shah from the airport till the party office on Saturday. “He will be welcomed at a series of receptions in Mohali and Chandigarh before he checks in the party office,” said city unit president Sanjay Tandon while revealing the itinerary of the two-day visit of Shah at Kamalam, Sector 33, on Thursday. Shah will be inaugurating the hi-tech party office on the first day. The three-storeyed wi-fi campus includes 400-seater Babu Shri Chand Goyal auditorium, Nana Deshmukh e-library and Rajesh Gupta Media Centre-cum-mini auditorium. He will also unveil the statue of Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay. TNS

Chaudhry to officiate in Asian Youth Athletics c’ships
Ravinder Chaudhry, who is working as Associate Professor in the Physical Education Department at DAV College here, has been appointed as the international technical official for the 2nd Asian Youth Athletics Championships to be held in Bangkok from the May 20 to May 23. Chaudhry is also the vice-president of the Athletics Federation of India.

Col Bawa, Dimple, Japjot clinch golf titles 
Col AKS Bawa won the men’s open category title in the nine-hole Merchant Navy Officers’ Association (MNOA) Golf Tournament at the Chandigarh Golf Club on Thursday. The women’s title went to Dimple Minocha. She was followed by Kuljit Suri. In the mariners’ category, Capt JM Singh emerged victorious. Capt KB Khanna finished in second place. Japjot Singh Suri, meanwhile, bagged the junior trophy. Abiya Kahai ended as runners-up. The winners received prizes from Golf Club president Ravibir Singh Grewal.
