Patiala: Blossoms Senior Secondary School organised the Brig Manmohan Singh Memorial-Inter School Debate under the aegis of Patiala Sahodaya School Complex on its premises.



Patiala: Blossoms Senior Secondary School organised the Brig Manmohan Singh Memorial-Inter School Debate under the aegis of Patiala Sahodaya School Complex on its premises. The topic for the debate was “Sustaining Pluralism in India Would Be Essential for Alleviating Poverty”. As many as 30 students from 15 different schools participated in the debate. Principal Bindu Vaid welcomed the guests. BM Singh (IRS), former chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes was the chief guest. He appreciated efforts of the participants and also shared his own views. The judges for the day were Prof Loveleen Kaur and Prof Amrit Samra. 

Civil Defence Day

Senior Secondary Model School, Punjabi University, observed International Civil Defence Raising Day. Director-cum-principal SK Nirmal Goyal congratulated the students and the staff for celebrating International Civil Defence Raising Day. The civil defence was started after World War I and India started the civil defence in 1962 after the China-India war. Kaka Ram Verma, ex-warden of the Indian Civil Defence, Patiala, apprised the students about the importance of the day and guided them to rescue people in need by teaching them the first aid, artificial respiration, firefighting and transporting injured. Golfing Tour from Dec 8 

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Golf Association will organise the 13th Chandigarh Golfing Tour from December 8 to 9. The first day’s play will be held at the Panchkula Golf Club, while the Chandigarh Golf Club will host Day Two of the championship. A total of 61 entries have been received from eight countries so far, the organisers said here on Wednesday. Maximum participation is from the USA, Canada and the UK. Teams from the Netherlands and Norway will also contest in the championship, they added. 

Bocce competition from today

Chandigarh: Special Olympics Bharat Chandigarh chapter will organise bocce competition for 50 children from December 7 to 8 at Sadhana Vocational Centre Mani Majra. The event will be held from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm, the organisers said here on Wednesday. TNS   

Team White, Team Red win

Chandigarh: Team White won the Xavarian Staff Cricket League, which concluded here on Wednesday. The team comprising Shama, Swati, Manisha, Prabhjit, Jaishree, Pallavi, Meenakshi, Madhu, Chandni and Anny won the women’s title.  In the men’s category, Team Red, including Chandan, Rupinder, Narinder, Dharampal, Noel,  Madan, Melvyn, Pritam and Dharamvir, won the championship. Gursagar boys beat KLCA

Chandigarh: Gursagar Cricket Academy registered a four-wicket win over KLCA Cricket Academy in the inaugural X-Max Cup U-17 Inter-Academy Cricket Tournament here on Wednesday. Batting first KLCA  scored 158/6 in 25 overs, with Pukhraj hitting a brisk 69. Abhishek scored 28, while Sachin added 23 runs to the total. In reply, Gursagar boys reached home in 24.1 overs with four wickets to spare.—TNS 

Court allows application

Chandigarh: Graft accused former Station House Officer (SHO) of the Sector 34 police station, Inspector Rajesh Shukla’s application to get his mobile phone back from the CBI has been allowed by the court. He, along with two constables, was nabbed while allegedly receiving Rs 10,000 bribe from a parking contractor in September 2014 and his mobile phone was also confiscated by the CBI. In his bail plea, he had stated that nothing was found on his phone. Thus, it should now be returned to him as it is of no use to the investigating agency. TNS

False ceiling falls on student

Chandigarh: A Mechanical Engineering first-year student of the Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology, Sector 26, here, got injured as a false ceiling of the hostel bathroom fell on him on Wednesday. The student, Abhinav Kumar, was taking bath at that time. He received 3 stitches on his head. He is reported to be safe now. TNS

Cricket: 2 held for betting

Zirakpur: The police here on Wednesday arrested two bookies for allegedly betting on cricket matches from a residential area in Baltana near Zirakpur. A police team from Zirakpur raided the residential house in Harmilap Nagar at Baltana on Wednesday after getting information that a betting racket was being operated from the house here. The accused identified as Sushil Kumar, a resident of Phase 2 Ram Darbar, Chandigarh, and Ashish Kotia of Dhanas, Chandigarh, were arrested for allegedly placing bets on Bangladesh Premiere League (BPL-2017) matches. The police said during the raid, they recovered a few pen drives and other items from the spot. The police have registered a case against both accused and started investigations. OC
