Seven Burail jail inmates who had misbehaved with women constables and female inmates were today sentenced to one-year jail by a local court. The court also told them to pay Rs 2,000 each. The seven inmates were found guilty under Sections 509, 186 and 294 of the IPC.

Ashu (26), Mohammad Irfan (30), Tej Pratap (19), Sahil (19), Rohit (24), Akash (22), and Vikas, alias Shera (19), were booked on the complaint of sub-inspector Raghvir Singh on October 21. In his complaint, he stated that on October 20, when the seven inmates were being taken to the prison bus on the courts complex, they started abusing women prisoners and constables and making obscene gestures at them.

The complainant also said Shrishti, a woman undertrial, was laughing and encouraging the convicts. Constables Suman, Mukesh Rani and Sudesh Kumari identified the seven convicts in the court.

The court found them guilty and announced the sentence to the seven inmates, who are already facing trial in separate cases.

In a bizarre display of emotions, the convicts created ruckus in the judicial lock-up (bakshi khana) after being held guilty and while their sentence was awaited. Around 4 pm, their voice could be heard at the first floor as well. The Judge asked his ‘naib’ to check who was creating ruckus.

After checking, the ‘naib’ informed the Judge that it was these seven convicts who were creating ruckus. They were then called to the court to announce the quantum of sentence. However, while the Judge was yet to come to the court, judicial lock-up in-charge Inspector Kuldeep Kaur started arguing and yelling at the ‘naib’. She was heard telling him that no one was making any sound in her ‘bakshi khana’.

She also asked the ‘naib’ who told him to come to the ‘bakshi khana’ and assume that the voices were coming from the lock-up and objected to not having talked to her. The ‘naib’ told her that he was doing what the Judge had asked him, which was also his duty.
