An eight-year-old boy died after the gate of a house belonging to Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s mother Shabnam Singh fell on him while he was playing with it at Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 4, yesterday.

The police today handed over the body to the victim’s family after post-mortem.

According to the police, the victim has been identified as Kuldeep, son of a labourer, whose family resides in the slum area at the back of Power Colony in Sector 4. Construction work is under way at the house and people from the slum area fetch water from the house.

Kuldeep, who was accompanying his maternal uncle to fetch water, started playing with the main gate of the house. Since the construction work was under way, the gate was not fixed properly. The child was reportedly dangling on the gate and it fell on him.

People rescued him. Later, his parents shifted him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. Meanwhile, the police were informed.

“We got a post-mortem examination done today and handed over the body to the family. We have got no complaint from the family. It was the negligence on the part of the child. We have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPc in this case,” stated Rajesh Kumari, SHO, Mansa Devi complex.

The police said Shabnam was not at the house when the incident happened. Her manager and other staff members were there. However, neighbours said she was at the house and came out when the incident happened.
