Accident victim’s kin meet police officials, demand strict action against accused

CHANDIGARH:The kin of 75-year-old Subodh Kumar Gupta, who was killed in a hit-and-run case on August 6, today met senior police officials, demanding strict action against the accused.

The kin of 75-year-old Subodh Kumar Gupta, who was killed in a hit-and-run case on August 6, today met senior police officials, demanding strict action against the accused. the incident had taken place at the Sector 10 market in the city. 

Gupta, a resident of Sector 4, was trying to cross the road when an SUV, reportedly driven by Harjasneet Singh Chahal, 27, a resident of Bathinda, hit him. The incident, which was recorded by a CCTV camera shows that the accused didn’t bother to stop at the spot to help the victim by rushing him to the hospital. The accused was arrested few days later and released on bail. 

Victim’s daughter Neeti Goel said that they met police officers today, demanding strict action against the accused. The accused has been booked under Section 304-A of the IPC (causing death by negligence), however, we are demanding that he should be booked under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), she added. 

Neeti added that the police officials have sought a week’s time from them. The victim’s kin have argued that even after seeing the elderly crossing the road, the accused didn’t slow down the SUV and didn’t even stop to take him to the hospital. “Precious minutes may have saved my father’s life,” Neeti added. 

Signature campaign

The victim’s family has initiated an signature campaign through the social media to mobilise support. Bollywood actor Sonu Sood has also come in support of the family. A video in support of the family has been posted on Facebook.
