Workshop on oracy in class
Patiala: A workshop on “Oracy in the classroom, critical thinking and reasoning” was held at The British Co-Ed School. The main objective of the workshops was to encourage teachers to re-assess their method and content of teaching to improve students’ skills. Orator G Rhydian Morgan, a lawyer by profession, from Birmingham, UK, addressed the students during the workshop. Auto driver ends life
Chandigarh: An auto driver allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his house in Maloya on Sunday night. No suicide note was recovered from the spot. The police said the deceased had been identified as Suraj (22). He was rushed to the Government Multi Specialty Hospital (GMSH) in Sector 16 where doctors declared him brought dead. The autopsy was conducted on Monday and the body handed over to the deceased's family. TNS
Rally for rape victims
Chandigarh: Students of the PGGC-11 organised an awareness rally on the college campus in solidarity with unfortunate rape incidents being reported from across the country. The march was to sensitise students to gender-specific crimes. Principal BP Yadav addressed the students and took a pledge with the students to make the college a safer place for everyone.
Orientation programme
Chandigarh: An orientation programme for project ‘SAARTHI’ by the State NSS Cell, in collaboration with Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), was organised by the NSS Unit of Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector 36-B, on Monday. The chief Guest on the occasion was Chandigarh DC Ajit Balaji Joshi. He shared his idea of the project ‘SAARTHI’ and his expectations from the NSS volunteers.
47th PU colloquium
Chandigarh: Panjab University Colloquium Committee, in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics, organised the 47th PU colloquium-cum-third Sarvadaman Chowla Memorial Lecture at Dr SS Bhatnagar UICET, Auditorium of Panjab University (PU), on Monday. Sujatha Ramdorai, an internationally renowned mathematician and the first Indian to have won the prestigious ICTP Ramanujan Prize, delivered a lecture on ‘Elliptic Curves and Number Theory’.

Labourer electrocuted
Kharar: Gopal, a 42-year-old construction worker, who was working at an under-construction building at Santemajra village near here, was electrocuted on Sunday evening, the police said here on Monday. Investigating officer Jaswant Singh said he was living here with his wife and three children. He had gone to switch on the electric motor and was electrocuted. His body has been kept at the Civil Hospital in Kharar. OC
Baby girl rescued
Mohali: A-week-old baby girl, who was found abandoned on a street in Sector 39, Chandigarh, was on Monday rescued and admitted to Jyoti Sarup Kanya Asra Trust in Kharar by a resident. The district authorities said a complaint regarding the missing baby was registered at the Kharar City police station on April 5. TNS
Builders booked for cheating
Zirakpur: The Zirakpur police have registered a case of cheating against two builders for allegedly duping a resident of lakhs of rupees and failing to get the registry of the flat done within time. Going by the statement of complainant Amit Gupta, a resident of Haryana, a case was registered against the builders at the Zirakpur police station following which an investigation has been started. According to the police, the complainant, a resident of Faridabad, Haryana, had alleged that he had booked a flat in Aero Homes, Zirakpur, for Rs 51.51 lakh in 2011. The complainant further alleged that despite repeated attempts, the accused failed to get the registry done within the stipulated time and did not return his money. The complainant stated that he came to know that the property, in which he had invested, had already been mortgaged to a bank. OC
One held on sodomy charge
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police have arrested a person on the charge of sodomy. According to the police, the accused have been identified as Sonu Gupta, a resident of Mori Gate, Mani Majra. The police have registered a case under Section 377 (unnatural offences) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Mani Majra police station. The accused was arrested and an investigation has been initiated. TNS
