Chandigarh, June 15

A six-wicket haul by off-spinner Arpit Singh helped Chandigarh restrict hosts Ludhiana to 247 runs in their first innings in a Punjab Inter-District U-23 Cricket Championship match at the PAU grounds on Friday.

At the draw of stumps, the visitors were batting on 43/1 with Jasnoor not out on 23 and Arjun Azad unbeaten on 15.

Earlier, Ludhiana had a positive start to their innings as Nehal Wadhera and Jaish Jain added 72 runs for the opening wicket.

The duo was separated when Wadhera fell to Arpit on 34 runs.

Jain and in coming Kashish Paneser then took control of the innings and pushed the total past the 150-run mark before Arpit struck once again for the visitors.

The off-spinner claimed Jain for 81 runs to end the 106-run partnership for the second wicket. Paneser became the third prey of Arpit. He was out after scoring a sedate 75 off 160 balls.

His wicket, though, triggered a collapse as Ludhiana lost their remaining wickets for less than 50 runs to fold up on 247 runs.

21 wickets fall in a day

At Dhruv Pandove Stadium, 21 wickets fall on the opening day of the match between Mohali and hosts Patiala.

Batting first, the hosts were all out for 116 runs in their first innings after Jassinder Singh and Harpreet Brar spun a web around the Patiala batsmen.

Off-spinner Jassinder was the wrecker in chief for the visitors, claiming 6/33. Left-arm spinner Brar picked 3/39.

Mohali batsmen, though, failed to capitalise on the good work of its bowlers and were all out for 145 runs in their first essay. Mayank Sidhu was the top scorer for the visitors with 39 runs, while Taranpreet made a sedate 38.

For the hosts, off-spinner Akul Pratap Pandove bagged 5/29, while Sukhwinder Singh accounted 4/49.

Gill scores double ton

Hosts Jalandhar, meanwhile, were in total command against Ferozepur at the Burlton Park after Mansab Gill hammered a double ton to propel the side to 560 on Day 1.

Batting first, Arjun Verma and Gill laid a solid foundation to the Jalandhar innings as they mustered 195 runs for the opening wicket.

The partnership was broken when Verma was trapped in front by Jai Kapoor on 60.

Gill, though, continued to punish the Ferozepur bowlers and brought his double century before being out for 216 runs.

His 194-ball stay in the middle was studded with 22 boundaries and 11 sixes.

Arun Kalia smashed a 50-ball 82, while Parth Aggarwal made a brisk 73 as the hosts scored a mammoth 560 on the opening day.

Jai Kapoor was the most impressive bowler for the visitors, picking up 6/137.
