Mohali, May 16

Apparently taking notice of government schools’ plight, published in a series in these columns recently, local Member of Parliament Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra today ordered the Education Department to ensure proper arrangements, especially of drinking water and clean toilets, in all schools of the area.

Following the Chandigarh Tribune series, under the title-‘School in a shamble’-the Mohali Deputy Commissioner and the Punjab Human Rights Commission have also taken steps to correct the things. While the PHRC, which took the suo-motu notice of the news items, has summoned authorities concerned for further action, the Mohali DC has sought the assistance of industrial houses to improve the infrastructure in schools under Corporate Social Responsibility scheme.

Today, heading the special District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee meeting at Mohali Municipal Corporation Bhawan at Sector 68, here today, Chandumajra cautioned the education authorities that the children in schools should not suffer due to any lackadaisical approach of the authorities.

“I know that ‘all is not well’ in schools, so don’t try to misguide me,” said Chandumajra when some officials tried to tell the MP that there was no problem of drinking water and toilets in all the schools.

Earlier, taking dig at Congress, Chandumajra said Congress ministers and legislators were busy in felicitating functions, thus affecting the public works.

In the meeting, a special committee, being headed by the ADC (general) was constituted for rainwater harvesting. Chandumajra directed that new ponds should be constructed for the purpose.

Taking serious note of absence of senior officials of PowerCom, Chandumajra asked the Mohali Deputy Commissioner to issue them show-cause notices. “How they (the officials) could afford to skip such an important meeting. They should be issued notices,” said Chandumajra.

The Member of Parliament also asked the authorities concerned to construct bhawans in rural areas to facilitate the residents there.
