CHANDIGARH: An ASI of the Punjab Police, Hans Raj, was stabbed and his bag allegedly snatched by three unknown youths on the road separating Sectors 9 and 10 during the wee hours of Thursday.



Chandigarh: An ASI of the Punjab Police, Hans Raj, was stabbed and his bag allegedly snatched by three unknown youths on the road separating Sectors 9 and 10 during the wee hours of Thursday. The incident took place near the Police Headquarters of both Chandigarh and Punjab. The victim has been identified as ASI Hans Raj, appointed in the security wing of the Punjab Police and deputed at the Punjab Police Headquarters, Sector 9. Sources said the victim, who stays in the barracks constructed for security personnel inside the Police Headquarters, got up early and went for a morning walk. The victim was targeted while crossing the road. Sources said one of the youths stabbed him on the butt and thigh after which they snatched the bag from him and fled from the spot. The ASI was admitted to GMSH-16. A DDR was lodged by the police at the Sector 3 police station. TNS

Direct flights to Nanded soon

Chandigarh: Anandpur Sahib MP and Shiromani Akali Dal general secretary Prem Singh Chandumajra on Friday announced direct flights from the Chandigarh and Amritsar international airports to Nanded from July. He said an assurance to this effect was given to him by Union Civil Aviation Minister P Gajapathi Raju at a meeting in New Delhi on Friday afternoon. The flights will be started by Air India for which all arrangements are being put in place. “This will facilitate Sikh pilgrims visiting Takht Hazoor Sahib at Nanded,” he claimed, thanking the Union Minister for the new facility. Chandumajra had raised the issue twice in the Lok Sabha. TNS

Man’s decomposed body found

Kalka: A decomposed body of a 32-year-old man was recovered from the Jhajjar river near Surajpur on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Shakeel Ahmed of Surajpur, who was missing from his house since May 12. The police have registered a case and were investigating it from all angles. Saddik Ahmed, father of the deceased, had lodged a missing complaint with the police on May 12. The deceased, who was running a barber shop, is survived with three children. OC

3 drug peddlers arrested

Kharar: The police have arrested three drug peddlers and recovered intoxicant injections from their possession. ASI Gurdev Singh of the Kharar police was patrolling near Niashaher village when he got information that Ankush of Kharar, Manvinder Singh of Kamali and Isthiak of Kharar were dealing in the sale of intoxicant injections and were moving in the area to sell the same to customers. The police party acted and arrested the three and recovered a total of 52 injections from their possession. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered. They have been sent to judicial custody. OC

Kharar bypoll from May 25 

Kharar: By-elections of 20 seats of panches and sarpanches in the Kharar sub-division would be held on June 11. Nomination paper for the election would be received from May 25 to May30. According to information, two seats of sarpanches of Gunnumajra and Jhingra Kalan villages are vacant in the Majri block of Kharar sub-division. Similarly, a total of 8 seats of panches at Lakhnoaur, Tarouli, Majra, Chandpur, Mundho Sangtia and Tarapur villages are vacant. Two seats of panches are vacant at Qadi Majra village. In Kharar block, 10 seats of panches are vacant in Bhartpur, Badmajra, Batta, Sukhgarh, Gadana, Patton, Dharamgarh, Nadali, Dharak Kalan and Sotal. According to information, Kharar SDM Amninder Kaur Brar has been appointed as returning officer for the elections. OC

Ailing patient needs help

Chandigarh: Snehashish Das Gupta (39), a resident of Ambala City, was admitted to the PGI, Chandigarh, with cirrhosis, decomposition with jaundice and ascites. He has been listed for liver transplant and will undergo the procedure as per the availability of deceased donor, said Prof Arunanshu Behera, nodal officer, Liver Transplant Surgery, PGI. The expense on the liver transplant has been estimated between Rs 7 lakh and Rs 12 lakh, which the patient has not been able to arrange. Call to oppose violence

Mohali: The Mohali Deputy Commissioner on Friday called for total opposition to violence, terrorism and anti-national forces. Gurpreet Kaur Sapra, who was addressing government officials and other employees in connection with Anti-Terrorism Day (May 21), said sacrifices must be made to maintain the unity of the country. She administered a pledge to those present to oppose all forms of terrorism and violence. OC

Two held for snatching bike

Kharar: The Ghauran police have arrested two persons who forcibly snatched a motorcycle from Manjeet Singh, a security guard working with a builders’ firm on Thursday night. Ghauran SHO Manphool Singh said Manjeet Singh was going to his village after finishing his duty on Thursday night. He was stopped by two persons who forcibly drove away his motorcycle and tried to put red chilli powder in his eyes. However, he had a narrow escape and informed the police about the same. The police have arrested two persons - Rajwinder Singh of Morinda and Sukhchean Singh of Ratangarh - and registered a case under Sections 379B and 34 of the IPC. The stolen motorcycle was also recovered from their possession. They were been sent to one-day police custody. OC

Man duped of Rs 47,000

Chandigarh: A resident of Sector 38 fell prey to fraudsters and lost  Rs 47,000. The victim, RK Sharma (75), said he received a call from a person posing as a bank executive who asked him his credit card details. Later, when the money was transferred from his banck account, he realised that it was a fraud. The police said the complaint would be sent to the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell. TNS

Fresh order on artists’ selection 

Chandigarh: The local court has directed CITCO to give weightage and preference to sketch artists who are already working at Sukhna Lake during the selection. The court has also asked it to fix the maximum fee to be charged by the sketch artists. Five artists had filed a petition that their contract to sit at the lake should be renewed.  The petitioners had stated that they had learnt that CITCO was mooting a proposal that only diploma-holder sketch artists could be allowed to sit and work there. The court order mentioned that as the applicants from the appearance seemed to be poor, the respondents should take a lenient and sympathetic view while selecting the artists. Even the number of seats can be increased.  TNS

Patiala: The investiture marked a significant beginning of the new academic session of Scholars Field Public School, Patiala. It was a solemn occasion when baton was passed on to the new prefectorial council. A ceremonial welcome was accorded to chief guest Amarjeet Singh Ghuman, SP, Patiala, by the Principal and members of the management committee.
