Chandigarh, October 14

Cracking the whip on those responsible for littering, the sanitation department of the Municipal Corporation issued a Rs 10,500 commercial challan to Barbeque Nation, Sector 26. Two residents of Mani Majra were also slapped a fine of Rs 5,500 challan each for it.

This is for the first time that challans have been issued for littering after a revision in rates. Officials said Barbeque Nation was challaned for littering and dumping garbage at the back of SCO No. 39.

The Mani Majra residents were penalised for throwing garbage near their localities. These challans were issued a few days ago. It came to light today when Mayor Asha Kumari Jaswal sought to know issues concerning sanitation.

“We do not want to challan anybody. Residents are requested not to indulge in littering,” Jaswal said. The Mayor directed area inspectors to clean all road berms, parks and other spots in the city before Diwali and take strict action against those responsible for littering.
