Chandigarh, August 14

As part of the National Mission to Exploit Renewable Sources of Energy, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) today commissioned a rooftop solar power plant on its premises here.

The 175-kW plant, inaugurated by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore, will generate 2.78 lakh units of electricity annually. It will be connected with the regional power grid and excess electricity that is not consumed by the BBMB will be transferred to the grid, which in turn will benefit the city.

BBMB plans to install more rooftop solar power plants at its locations in other places and the next such plant will come up at Nangal, for which modalities are being worked out.

A pioneer in hydroelectric power, the BBMB is in the process of upgrading and modernising its existing hydro power plants for enhancing its electricity generation power and also adding renewable energy generation to its system. Besides being environment friendly, it will also overcome the gap in demand and supply. It will also lower the cost of electricity in the long run.

BBMB chairman DK Sharma, member (Irrigation) SK Sharma, member (Power) VK Kalra, along with other senior functionaries as well as a large number of BBMB staff, were present on the occasion.
