Bookies’ racket busted in Zirakpur, 8 held

ZIRAKPUR:The police on Sunday night busted a bookies’ racket and arrested eight persons from a flat here for allegedly betting on T-20 matches being played between South Africa and England.

The police on Sunday night busted a bookies’ racket and arrested eight persons from a flat here for allegedly betting on T-20 matches being played between South Africa and England.

A police team led by ASI Balwinder Singh raided Motiaz Royale City, Zirakpur, last night after getting information that a betting racket was being operated from the flat.

Police sources said all eight bookies were arrested for allegedly placing bets on the T-20 match being played between South Africa and England last night.

The police suspect that the racket might have links with other major rackets.

Those arrested have been identified as Rishu, Mukesh Kumar, Sandeep Kumar, Rajwinder Pal, Manu Kumar, Vikas Kumar, Suresh Kumar and Harish Kumar.

The police sources said during the raid, the police team recovered 36 mobiles phones, 2 LCDs, 3 laptops and Rs 1 lakh from the spot.

The sources said the police team received a tip-off that the accused used to run a betting racket and they were involved in betting on T-20 matches, following which a raid was conducted and all bookies were arrested.

The police have registered a case under the Gambling Act against all accused at the Zirakpur police station. The sources said all accused were produced before a court, which sent them to judicial custody.
