Kharar: The election to offices of senior and junior vice-presidents of the Kharar Municipal Council was held on Thursday. Sunil Kumar of the Congress was elected the senior vice-president.

Kharar: The election to offices of senior and junior vice-presidents of the Kharar Municipal Council was held on Thursday. Sunil Kumar of the Congress was elected the senior vice-president. Kamal Kishore Sharma of the SAD was elected the junior vice-president. As many as 25 votes were polled. Kharar MLA Kanwar Sandhu was not present on the occasion. SDM Amrinder Kaur Brar presided over the proceedings. Sunil Kumar got 14 votes while Kamal Kishore Sharma got 11. Former Kharar MLA Jagmohan Singh Kang said the councillors voted for the Congress as they wanted to get rid of the “gundaraj” of the SAD-BJP.  He alleged that leaders of SAD-BJP offered more than Rs 5 lakh to each councillor to vote in favour of their candidate. 16-yr-old girl goes missing

Dhakoli: A 16-year-old girl went missing under mysterious circumstances from here. The victim’s father lodged an FIR at the Dhakoli police station, stating that his wife worked as a maid and his daughter had gone to collect money on Tuesday evening but did not return home. He suspected that she might have been kidnapped. OC

City pharma firm bags award

Chandigarh: Angiolife Healthcare Private Limited won the best pharmaceutical company award at the Indian Pharma Expo-2017. Davinder Pal Singh, managing director of the Chandigarh-based company, received the Business Excellence Award during a function at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. The three-day Indian Pharma Expo concluded on August 5. TNS

One held with two-wheelers

Kharar: The CIA staff, Kharar, arrested Varinder, a resident of UP, following the recovery of two stolen two-wheelers from him on Thursday. According to information, ASI Rajinder Singh was patrolling near Jandpur village when he got information that the accused was moving about in the area with an intention to commit a crime. He was arrested immediately by a police party. OC 

Labourer found dead 

Dera Bassi: A migrant labourer was found dead under mysterious circumstances at Haripur Kuran village near here. The exact cause of his death is unknown and the police are waiting for the medical report. The deceased body has been kept in a mortuary at the local Civil hospital for identification. According to the preliminary investigation, the deceased has been living here for the past 15 years and was an alcoholic. Police sources said he might have died due to excessive consumption of liquor. OC

50 boxes of liquor recovered

Kharar: The Kharar City police recovered a Scorpio car with 50 boxes of  liquor from near Khanpur Chowk here on Thursday. ASI Nidhan Singh of the Kharar police had got the secret information that the car was loaded with 50 boxes of liquor, which were being illegally taken to Fatehgarh Sahib from Chandigarh. The police acted and spotted the vehicle near Khanpur Chowk but the driver of the vehicle escaped, leaving the vehicle behind. OC 

Child hurt in mishap dies 

Kharar: Three-year-old boy Rohit, who was seriously injured in a road accident near Gharuan village some days ago, died at the PGI on Wednesday. ASI Kulwinder Singh of the Ghauran police said he, along with his father Raj Rishi, had gone to Gharuan some days ago. The boy was seriously injured when he was knocked down by a car. He was admitted to  the PGI where he died on Wednesday. the Gharuan police have registered a case against the driver of the car. OC

Firing: Car, pistol recovered

Panchkula: The Panchkula police have recovered a car and a pistol used by the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, who had fired six shots at a builder’s house in Sector 2 here on July 3. The police recovered the Swift car and the pistol after the interrogation of gangster Inderpreet Singh, alias Parry (27), a resident of Sector 33, Chandigarh, who was recently arrested by the Chandigarh Police. Parry had earlier revealed that Bharat Bhushan, alias Bhola Shooter (23), a resident of Kotkapura, Punjab, and Vineet Saini, a resident of Sector 44, Chandigarh, had executed the plan on the directions of Lawrence Bishnoi. Man goes missing

Chandigarh: A 46-year-old man went missing under mysterious circumstances from the city. Sources said the victim, identified as Bhikkam, a labourer working in Burail, left for his native place in Uttar Pradesh in a bus on August 2. However, the victim didn’t reach home. The victim had boarded a bus from the Sector 20/30/32/33 roundabout. The victim’s kin made a police complaint, following which a DDR has been lodged at the Sector 34 police station. TNS

World Bio-Fuel Day celebrations

Chandigarh: World Bio-Fuel Day was celebrated in a bid to create awareness about non-fossil fuels (green fuels). Bio fuel programme in India is aimed at creating a secure and sustainable environment-friendly bio fuel economy to achieve a vibrant rural economy, besides achieving energy security for the nation and as a tool for rural development and rural life uplift. Sandeep Jain, state-level coordinator, Punjab, and Chief General Manager, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Punjab State Office, presided over the function in the presence of Dhananjay Srivastava, GM in-charge (Retail Sales), IOCL, Punjab State Office. The event was attended by school students, farmers and officials of oil marketing companies. During the function, videos and presentations on bio fuel energy were shown and lectures were delivered highlighting the importance of bio-energy. TNS

Sec 22 resident stabbed

Chandigarh: The police arrested Rajinder Singh Rawat, alias Gora, of Sector 22 for stabbing one Ankit of the same sector. The victim was stabbed near his residence after which he was admitted to the PGI. A case of attempt to murder has been registered. TNS

Boy goes missing 

Chandigarh: A 17-year-old boy has gone missing under mysterious circumstances. Sources said the victim, identified as Jyotirmay Sharma, a resident of Sector 32, left for coaching at Sector 34 on Wednesday and did not return home. A DDR has been lodged. TNS 

Man held with heroin 

Chandigarh: The crime branch of the Chandigarh Police have arrested one Vikram Singh, a resident of Sector 29, from near the airport light point. Five-gm heroin was recovered from his possession.  A case has been registered. TNS

Two arrested for snatching 

Chandigarh: Two persons were arrested for snatching a wallet and a mobile phone.  Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of Khuda Alisher, Chandigarh, alleged that Suraj and Pardeep of Mohali, snatched his wallet and mobile phone from a wine shop. A case has been registered. TNS

Chandigarh: A girl reported to the police that an unknown person passed objectionable comments on her at the Sector 15 market. A case has been registered at the Sector 11 police station. TNS

Badminton trials from Aug 23

Chandiagrh: The Chandigarh Badminton Association will conduct trails to select teams for the North Zone Inter State Junior and Senior Badminton Championships from August 23 to 27. While the trails for boys and girls are scheduled from August 23 to 25, the trials for men and women would be held between August 25 and 27, the organisers said here on Thursday. The trails will be conducted at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, and Chandigarh Indoor Badminton Hall. The interested players can register for the event from August 12 to August 19, the organisers said, adding that the players need to carry valid date of birth certificates with them to the venue. — TNS

Sukhman helps Saupin’s win

Chandiagrh: Sukhman and Aryan shared nine wickets between them as Saupin’s School beat Chandigarh Baptist School by nine wickets in the boys’ U-17 inter-school cricket match at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here on Thursday. Electing to bowl, Saupin’s led by Sukhman’s five-wicket haul (5/4) bundled out Baptist for 27 runs in 12 overs. Aryan claimed 4/8. In reply, Saupin’s boys reached home with nine wickets in hand. Sachet scored 17 runs off 13 balls. — TNS

Construction of overbridge begins

Patiala: The Union Ministry has given its nod to construct an overbridge in front of a gurdwara dedicated to the ninth Sikh Guru at Bahadurgarh on the Chandigarh-Patiala highway. The work has been started on the site. Sanaur MLA Harinderpal Singh Chandumajra had met the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, on July 13 in this regard. “Hundreds of devotees visit the gurdwara everyday. Residents have been demanding the construction of an overbridge as there is no straight passage to the gurdwara from the main road, and devotees have no option but to travel longer distance,” he said. —TNS

Police DAV students shine

Patiala: In the zone-level games held at Multipurpose School, Patiala, students of Police DAV School brought laurels. The under-17 volleyball team won silver medal, while Shireen won gold medal in skating (U-14). In karate, Lovneet Kaur and Khushpinder Kaur won gold medal (U-17) and Gagandeep Kaur won gold medal (U-19). In kick-boxing, Lovejot won gold medal (U-19) and Dixit won gold (U-17). In boxing, Arshpreet Singh, Baljot Singh and Sarabjot Singh won gold medals and Navjot won silver medal. In handball U-19, the school team won gold medal. In handball U-17, team of Police DAV won bronze medal. In wrestling, Sahil and Charanveer Singh won gold medal. The achievers were applauded in the morning assembly and were encouraged to achieve excellence in their chosen fields.

I-Day celebrated

Students of Guru Nanak Foundation (GNF) Public School, Patiala, celebrated Independence Day inside the school premises. The stage was beautifully decorated with tri-coloured balloons and slogans. The black badge holders escorted the principal and teachers tied tri-colored badge as a symbol of patriotism. Principal Renu Hanspal presided over the function. To make the day more memorable, a tree plantation drive was also organised in collaboration with the Rotary Club. OC
