Members of the Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee today staged a dharna in protest against non-acceptance of cash payment above Rs 500 at Sampark centres.

Squatting in front of the Sampark centre in Sector 21 here, the protesters raised slogans against the ruling BJP.

State Congress president Pradeep Chhabra alleged, “Local BJP MP Kirron Kher has done no good work for the development of the city in the past four years. She has made Chandigarh an experimental city of the BJP.”

He added: “In India, the BJP ended kerosene usage, then they stopped ration scheme and now they have restricted the Sampark centres to accept only Rs 500 in cash. The new law is being implemented without taking the opinion of Chandigarh residents. It is cheating with the people of the city, which Congress will not let happen,” he added.

Congress leaders Subhash Chawla, DD Jindal, Harphool Kalyan, Devinder Babla, Bhupinder Badhari, Harmohinder Lucky, Gurpreet Happy, Ajay Joshi, Gurpreet Gabi and others were present at the dharna.

The UT Finance Department had issued directions to the Sampark centres last month not to accept payment over Rs 500 in cash. In August last year, the Administration had fixed a limit of Rs 2,000 for cash payment.

Over 40 types of fees, including water and electricity bills, are accepted at Sampark centres.

The Administration had taken the decision to promote digital payment.
