CPCC to seal polluting units without notice

CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) has decided to seal industrial units, hotel and restaurants running without consent.

The Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) has decided to seal industrial units, hotel and restaurants running without consent. They will be doing so without issuing any notice.

DanishAshraf, Member Secretary, said the action would start from February 15.

An officer of the department said that the consent of the CPCC was required under Section 25 & 26 of The Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974; under Section 21 of the Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 and under Rule 5 of Hazardous Waste (Management, Handling and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2008 of Environmental (Protection) Act, 1986.

He said that any unit found running without consent was liable to be sealed and electricity and water supply would be disconnected in addition to prosecution for violations under rules without an separate intimation/ show-cause notice. The department has already set up an intelligence unit that is collecting the information regarding violators. The list has been prepared.

The decision to seal the units without notice was taken after the Administration sealed 13 industrial units last week causing pollution. He said that despite several notices it had been found that many

units were discharging waste water without any necessary treatment and emitting air emissions without any air pollution control device.

The staff has carried out the drive in Sector 17 where one DG set was sealed while the other was removed by the company after the notice. The enforcement officers acted after the lists of such DG sets was prepared by the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee. The order was issued to help reduce air and noise pollution in the market. The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Delhi, also in its order banned the use of diesel generator sets in the city's markets.
