Commerical vehicles, including tippers carrying soil and tractor-trailers, plying in the town, will now have to pay tipping fee to the Dera Bassi municipal council.

The decision has been taken to maintain link roads as these heavy vehicles, carrying sand and gravel, cause damage to these. The decision was taken on the agenda placed in the monthly house meeting of the MC.

MC officials and councillors proposed a slew of charges in order to raise funds for the re-carpeting of the damaged roads. Local MLA NK Sharma was also present on the occasion. Bhupinder Saini, president of the local MC, said, “We will take Rs 200 for a big tipper, Rs 100 for medium vehicles (trucks) and Rs 50 for a tractor-trailer.”

MC officials added that these overloaded vehicles carrying soil ply from outskirts of the town via Dera Bassi. Each tipper makes at least two trips a day, proving to be a nightmare for commuters.

The MC president said, “We have sent the proposal for approval to the higher authorities. Once approved, a tender will be floated.”
