Continuing its dismal show in Punjab School Education Board’s Class X results, Mohali, the so-called educational hub and the most advanced districts of the state, has again hit the bottom in the district-wise merit list, along with Fazilka district. Both districts have two students each in the merit list, containing as many as 379 students with 95.38 per cent cut-off marks.

In 2016, not even a single student from Mohali district managed to secure berth in the list of 355 students.

This year, the total pass percentage of Mohali district is 44.73 per cent, which has been placed at the 21st spot, second from bottom, in the list of district-wise pass percentage. Only Sangrur with total pass percentage of 42.85 hit the bottom in the chart. Last year, Mohali was placed at the 22nd spot, second from bottom, with 61.77 pass percentage.

No government school in the entire district can produce a meritorious student this year. Only two girl students from different private schools of Mohali town proved to be saving grace.

A total of 8,690 students have appeared for the examination from Mohali, of which only 3,887 could clear the exam.

“The data shows that how the district (Mohali) has performed poorly in Class X results again, but this is nothing new. Now it happens every year,” said a senior official of the PSEB.

In 2015, the district had witnessed four students in the provisional merit list and in 2014, the number of the students in the chart was only two. In 2015, the total pass percentage in Mohali district was 55.35, while it was 61.56 per cent in 2014.

For the past over five years, the district has been faring poorly in Classes X and XII results and the education authorities reiterated to take action against non-performing teachers here every year.

“The poor performance of Mohali government schools is mainly attributed to the posting of VIP teachers here. It’s an open secret that most of such teachers, belonging to influential families, are non-serious when it comes to performing duty with utmost sincerity. As nobody dares to take action against such VIP teachers, Mohali continue to suffer,” said a senior officer of the PSEB.
