Chandigarh, October 18

Traffic snarls were witnessed across the city roads today due to festive rush, especially during evening hours.

The sectors that were affected included Sectors 15, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 34, 35, 44 etc.

There was major chaos at Sector 22 / 23 light point, Aroma light point, Sector 34-35 rotary, Transport chowk (Sector 26), Tribune chowk, Poultry Farm roundabout and near Elante Mall, Industrial Area, Phase 1.

Parking space in most markets was gobbled up by stalls, resulting in spilling of traffic on the roads. "Encroachment by vendors has taken up space meant for vehicles," Sunil Kang, a Sector 15 resident.

There was a minor jam the markets having sweet shops as people went to buy sweets and gifts. The approach roads to every market place turned chaotic as shoppers rushed to finish their last-minute Diwali shopping. This was despite additional staff being deployed around the markets for the past few days to remove roadblocks.

The cops were also seen asking people to park their vehicles properly.

"Half of the chaos is caused due to wrong parking which leads to congestion on roads," said Mira, a Sector 32 resident.
