Drunken driving challans to surpass last year’s figure

CHANDIGARH:With over 5,000 motorists already challaned this year for drunken driving, the UT traffic police are surely going to surpass the 2016 figure when total 5,033 persons were challaned for drunken driving throughout the year.

With over 5,000 motorists already challaned this year for drunken driving, the UT traffic police are surely going to surpass the 2016 figure when total 5,033 persons were challaned for drunken driving throughout the year. September witnessed a maximum number of drunken driving challans with a total 1,158 persons caught for the offence.

The pace with which the UT traffic police has initiated challaning drive against drunken driving in the past few months, the total number of challans are surely going to reach a figure that will be remembered.

While during initial months the number of challans was 322 in January, 301 in February and 345 in March. The challans witnessed a dip in the next two months with 147 violators challaned in April and 168 challaned in May.

The past four months witnessed a steep rise in number of drunken driving challans, while 605 challans were issued in June, 696 in July, 823 challans in August and a new high of 1,158 challans in September.

A police official said intensified drives against drunken driving and new initiatives, including mobile nakas, under which locations of nakas were changed after an hour, had helped in catching more offenders, further leading to rise in challans. “Earlier the drunken driving nakas were not laid regularly. However, the nakas are frequently laid”, said a police official.  — TNS
