Owing to winds from Rajasthan, which has experienced a dust storm, an envelope of dust has engulfed Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand and Delhi.

The visibility was around 3,000 metre at 3.30 pm in Chandigarh, according to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

“During hot weather, soil becomes loose. Due to a dust storm, with speed around 40 km/hr, dust has risen in the region,” said Director IMD, Chandigarh, Surender Paul.

As a result of dust storm, the day temperature has come down and nights would be warmer, Paul added.

“There are anti-cyclonic conditions at the height of 3-4 km, preventing the movement of air. It is hindering convection,” he said.

In a forecast, the weather department has predicted that the present conditions would continue for a 24-hour period. “There is likelihood of rain on June 15 night or June 16 due to western disturbances. The dust will settle down after that,” he added.
