The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has decided to spend Rs 6 crore on road infrastructure in Sectors 76 to 80 here.

The amount would be spent on the construction of roads, their missing parts at several places and their re-carpeting in these developing sectors that are virtually neglected and crying for development in the absence of basic infrastructure.

Giving information, Sunil Kumar Kansal, GMADA Chief Engineer, said they were going to spend Rs 6 crores on overhauling of roads in the new sectors.

The Chief Engineer claimed that it would take six months to complete the project of overhauling of roads in these sectors.

Giving reasons for the poor condition of these roads, he said there was a dispute of of a 102-acre land in the area.

“Actually it was around 250 acres of land, which was under dispute. The GMADA could not construct roads properly in the area due to the dispute. At several places, we had to leave the road incomplete due to the same,” said the Chief Engineer.

He said now over 90 per cent of the land chunk (which was under dispute) was cleared from litigation.

“Now with the amount, we would construct all those missing links on the roads. Besides, all old roads in these sectors would be re-carpeted,” Kansal said. Notably, the development of Sectors 76 to 80 was started in 2002.

“Nearly 16 years have passed since the development process of our sectors has been started, but the area is still the most neglected in the town. You could see the presence of wild growth, huge pits, non-functional street lights, ill-maintained parks, broken roads all around the place. We are literally demanding for basic facilities here and the authorities seem to be least bothered about our plight,” said Manjit Singh, a local resident.
