NGOs and people have come forward to help 62-year-old Amrik Kaur whose plight was highlighted in these columns today. Kaur had to spend two days in the court to get the superdari of her deceased son’s stolen motorcycle to get it back from the police. Half-paralysed, Kaur is a widow with one surviving son, who is in a drug rehabilitation centre.

Till the filing of this report, an NGO had pledged to get her weakening eyes operated upon while another had pledged to take care of her daily needs from now on. A Mohali-based family also met her today at her Sector 40 residence and gave her rations and some cash and also recharged her mobile phone. Kaur said she received multiple calls all day.

The court staff as well as the malkhana munshi at the Sector 39 police station, where the motorcycle was kept, informed that several people had contacted them as well to get in touch with Kaur and help her.

‘Was depressed, but now people are helping me’

An emotional Kaur, while speaking to Chandigarh Tribune, said, “I was depressed, but now I am being offered so much help. I used to sit outside my house from 9 am till even 8 pm at night hoping to get some work”. She said she was initially scared of giving her address to strangers but all of them turned out to be very supportive.
