High drama was witnessed as the sub-postmaster at the post office in the District Court Complex refused to accept 98 legal notices to be dispatched in a cheque-bounce case today.

A court had ordered the notices be dispatched today itself. However, when advocate Arun Kumar’s clerk went to the post office, the sub-postmaster told him that they cannot post notices in bulk. Later, advocates Gurpreet Singh Saini, Varun Bhardwaj and Jaspreet Singh went to the post office. Postal staff told them that they did not have the power to post more than three letters at a time and hence, they will have to queue up 33 times.

Sub-postmaster VK Suri, however, claimed that he had asked the three lawyers to come tomorrow.

Arguments ensued, following which the lawyers went back only to return with the District Bar Association (DBA) members.

After high drama in the one-room office, the sub-postmaster agreed to do the work, which was completed in around 20 minutes.

Suri told the DBA members that they did not have enough staff or a counter to deal with bulk dispatches.

DBA president Ravinder Bassi said the sub-postmaster should have told them earlier if that was the case.

The advocates also highlighted that there was no complaint registration process at the post office. They claimed that when they asked for a complaint register, they were told that there was none.
