Hit by train, 23-yr-old dies

Mohali, February 17

A 23-year-old youth died after being hit by a freight train at Kambala village here on Friday night.

The deceased has been identified as Savinder Singh, a native of Amritsar who worked as a labourer with a contractor here.

The incident took place at around 11.25 pm. The youth came under a goods train coming from Jammu.

MC Gupta, Station Superintendent, said, “The train driver blew the horn on seeing the youth and applied brakes as well but he did not respond and remained on the railway track. We informed the Government Railway Police (GRP) Kharar, who are conducting an investigation into the incident.”

The investigating officer, Jagdev Singh, said they were probing if it was an accident or suicide. Sources said the victim was in an inebriated condition and did not notice the train approaching him.

The post-mortem was conducted today and the body handed over to family members of the deceased.

The victim’s maternal uncle Pritam Singh claimed it was an accident.
