Kharar, April 20

Kharar MLA Kanwar Sandhu has demanded that a coordination committee be set up to supervise the ongoing Flyover Project on the National Highway passing through the township.

Scooterist dies in mishap

An angry Sandhu was seen personally supervising the traffic operations in the town with traffic police officers after a scooterist died in the afternoon. The scooterist, who skidded on the ‘bajri’ strewn on the road by the construction company, was overrun by a heavy vehicle. Besides the motorist, the Kharar MLA wanted officials of the construction company to be booked for causing the fatality on Friday. The MLA and AAP party volunteers were seen removing the scooterist from the road after the accident.

The MLA later wrote a letter to SAS Nagar Deputy Commissioner Gurpreet Kaur Sapra. In the letter, he has said the construction company was carrying out the construction work in a callous and careless manner without adhering to the safety norms. The proposed coordination committee, which should be headed by the Kharar SDM, should consist of representatives of the National Highway Project, L&T Company (carrying out the construction), Kharar Municipal Committee, Traffic Police, and a representative of the public (preferably of the Jan Hit Vikas Manch, Kharar). This committee should hold a weekly meeting, which should ensure the set time frames are being met by the L&T, security aspects are being ensured by the L&T and national highway Team, traffic is being regulated by the traffic police and employees of the L&T, encroachments are not allowed on the two sides of the highway by MC officials and sewer lines of city colonies are not obstructed by the construction activity.

The committee should also ensure that the construction activity is halted till the ‘mandatory service lane’ is provided on both sides of the road by the L&T, the MLA demanded.

It must also ensure that the L&T provides at least 25 trained guards who report to the Traffic Inspector located at the Traffic Box near the bus stand for deployment on a daily basis.

The committee must also ensure that a mobile ambulance with trained paramedics is stationed near the Traffic Box at the bus stand 24X7, for any eventuality. This work could be undertaken either by the Civil Hospital, Kharar, or local NGOs, Sandhu added.

The Kharar MLA later met the Executive Officer of the Kharar MC and also spoke to officials of the L&T in connection with the safety of the project and also to remove traffic bottlenecks.
