Kharar, August 10
Residents of Darpan City in Kharar staged a dharna on the road leading to the nearby dumping ground today. They stopped the trucks carrying garbage to the dumping ground. Many women also participated in the dharna. The dharna started at 7 am in the morning and ended at 5 pm.
They demanded that the dumping ground be immediately shifted as it had become impossible to bear the foul smell emanating from it. The residents said they had been demanding the shifting of the dumping ground for the past five years. “Nowadays, the living conditions have worsened. it is impossible to live here anymore,” they added.
They vowed to continue their protest till a concrete solution was found by officials. Sandeep Tiwari, EO of the local municipal council, reached the spot and listened to grievances of the residents. He said the civic body had already sanctioned Rs 10 lakh to cover the garbage with sand. The decision to shift the dumping ground will be taken by municipal council members.
Former MLA Jagmohan Singh Kang too reached the spot in the evening and persuaded the residents to end their dharna. He said a special meeting of the civic body would be held on August 18, in which the issue would be raised.
